“I moisturize my face but I don’t have enough time to moisturize my body.”
“My entire body feels dry.”
There are many people who are unsatisfied with their body care or are neglecting the skin on their body.
According to Shiseido, 60% of women aged 20~40 expere\ience dryness in their body after bathing.
However, about 90% were unaware that:
1. Skin is drier after bathing.
2. There is a limited time after bathing that skin needs to be moisturized.
In order to achieve smooth body skin, it is important to understand the correct way to moisturize your body.
Once you understand this, you can conduct your body care easily!
In this article, we will introduce the correct method to moisturize and bathe, as well as recommended products for body care.
What is the correct way to moisturize?
Even if you want to achieve beautiful skin, it can be difficult to see changes if you conduct skincare based on your own preconceived notions.
There is also a lot of information on the Internet and social media, so it can be difficult to determine what is correct.
Below, we explain the basics and key points about correct moisturization.
Basics about skin
Our skin has 3 layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue (in order of outside to inside). Each layer plays a key role.
- Epidermis: prevents external substances from entering and prevents moisture from evaporating (barrier function)
- Dermis: supports skin structure and elasticity
- Subcutaneous tissue: moves nutrients and waste products
In addition, the epidermis has 4 layers: stratum corneum, stratus granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale (in order of outside to inside), and cells are continuously regenerated through a mechanism called skin turnover.
The length of the skin turnover cycle varies from person to person, but it is typically around 28 to 56 days.
This cycle can be disrupted by factors such as lack of sleep, fatigue, and stress.
When the cycle is disrupted, skin cells become immature and dead skin cells remain within the skin, which impairs the skin’s barrier function.
In order to take care of dry skin and achieve smooth skin, it is important to regulate skin turnover and strengthen your skin barrier.
Basics about skincare
With so much information about skincare, it can be confusing which one to trust.
In such cases, there are 3 key points to remember.
3 key points about skincare 1. Keep your skin clean and hygienic 2. Replenish moisture 3. UV protection
First, it is important to keep your skin clean and hygienic.
In addition to hands, feet, and other part of the body that become dirty easily, areas thata re prone to sweat and areas with many sebaceous glands should be washed more carefully.
When washing these areas, do not rub harshly because the friction can damage the skin. Make sure to wash gently and carefully.
Once you have cleaned your skin, the next step is to replenish moisture.
Elbows, knees, heels, and other eras with a thick layer of keratin will quickly become rough and cracked if they lack moisture.
It is important to moisturize consistenly and frequently with a body cream, oil, or gel.
Moreover, UV rays not only cause freckles and blemishes but also weaken the skin’s barrier function.
For areas such as your arms, legs, neck and other areas that are not covered, make sure to use sunscreen, sun umbrellas, and other UV protection measures.
UV rays are strong even during winter and cloudy days, so be sure to take precautions year-round.
Why do we need to moisturize?
When your skin lacks moisture due to dry air, UV rays, or aging, it becomes sensitive to irritation and prone to flakiness and itchiness.
There are many types of skincare items, but all of them are designed to replenish moisture, NMFs (natural moisturizing factors), and lipids to your skin.
Moisturizing with these skincare items helps prevent various skin problems.
Moreover, an article by Belle Vienus states the following:
- Excessive moisturization and slow drying of keratin will improve skin condition.
- Moisturizing regulates the skin’s barrier function.
- Applying toner, milky lotion, and cream in that order will slowly dry keratin.
In other words, moisturizing is extremely important for healthy skin.
In order to achieve healthy skin, it is importnt to thoroughly moisturize your skin and slowly dry it.
(Specific methods and precautions will be explained later)
The best time to moisturize your body during bath time!
If you want to moisturize your entire body, you should do so during bath time.
Moisturizing requires 2 key ingredients.
1. Water to hydrate the skin.
2. Oil to prevent hydration from evaporating out of the skin.
Bathing can clean and hydrate the skin.
If you replenish oil at this time, your entire body can be moisturized effectively.
We recommend using water that is slightly lukewarm – around 38°C.
If the water is too hot, it can irritate the skin and take away the skin’s natural oils, making it more prone to dryness.
Although a hot shower or bath can be tempting, we recommend keeping the water temperature no higher than 40°C if you want to prioritize your skincare.
Aim to moisturize within 10 minutes after bathing
We recommend moisturizing after bathing. More specifically, 10 minutes after bathing.
This is because bathing increases the skin’s water content but it rapidly decreases after 10 minutes.
By replenishing moistue no later than 10 minutes after bathing, you can prevent rapid moisture evaporation.
Also, when washing your body, do not rub harshly or wash for a long time.
This is because the friction can damage the skin.
Even when using exfoliators and peeling products, do not use them more times than recommened.
【Before bathing】How to take care of your skin
Typically, you do not need to take care of your skin before you bathe.
Hoowever, there are some exceptions.
One of them is if you have not removed your makeup.
Many people remove their makeup when they take a bath, but you should remove your makeup as soon as possible.
Makeup applied in the morning mixes with sweat and sebum produed during the day. This slowly oxidizes and by the end of the day, the oxidation has progressed to a level that damages the skin.
If possible, remove your makeup as soon as you get home – before you bathe.
Make sure to moisturize your skin after you remove your makeup to avoid skin dryness too.
Cleansing and moisturizing your face
When removing your makeup as soon as you get home, we recomend using low-stimulus products.
Specifically, we recommend using gel cleansers that do not require double cleansing.
Moisturize after removing your makeup to make sure tha tyour skin’s barrier function is not weakened before you bathe.
【While bathing】How to take care of your skin
Washing your scalp
Thescalp has twice as many sebum-secreting organs as the forehead and five times as many as the back, making it the most sebum-secreting area of the body.
Therefore, it is an area that does not become dry easily.
However, if you damage your scalp, its turnover cycle is accelerated by stimulation and can cause dryness, dandruff, and itchiness.
Especially if you are washing your hair incorrectly when using shampoo and conditioner, your scalp can become dry.
To solve dry scalp and dandruff, it is very important to wash correctly at the correct time when bathing.
There are 7 steps to correctly washing your scalp.
Try washing your scalp using this correct method!
1 | Brush your hair to untangle any knots
2 | Rinse your hair with water to remove dirt
3 | Take an appropriate amount of shampoo for your hair length (One pump = 3~5ml)
4 | Foam the shampoo in your hands
5 | Spread the shampoo from scalp → hair
6 | Thoroughly rinse your hair with 10~15L of warm water
7 | Do not apply conditioner to your scalp |
Most important: Using your fingers to wash your scalp (not your nails!)
After foaming the shampoo with your hands, use the pads of your fingers to massage the shampoo into your scalp. DO NOT USE YOUR NAILS!
Brushing your hair (Step 1) and rinsing your hair with water (Step 2) removes most of the dirt in your hair.
Therefore, the purpose of shampooing is to remove dirt from the scalp.
Also, by washing your scalp, the shampoo will naturally spread to your hair.
Wash your hair with the following ratio in mind.
Scalp:hair = 8:2.
If you have long hair, wash your hair with the foam left over from washing your scalp.
If you are worried about your scalp being dirty or sticky, or if you have long nails, use a silicone scalp brush or massager.
How to spread the shampoo on your scalp
1 | Start from the back of your neck and gradually work upwards, spreading the shampoo to the back of your head. The back of your head has a large amount of hair so it tends to accumulate more dirt. Be sure to spread more shampoo to this area.
2 | Next, spread the shampoo from the side of your head (above the ears) to the top of your head.
3 | Finally, spread the shampoo to your hairline and temples. |
Just by washing your scalp correctly, you can achieve moisturization.
【After bathing】How to take care of your skin
The real battle starts after bathing.
As mentioned previously, it is important to conduct your skincare within 10 mins after bathing.
Afte bathing, the areas to moisturize are your skin/body, feet and legs.
Let’s look at them in order.
Moisturizing your skin/body
Moisturizing your face and body follow the same methods.
By bathing, your skin has already been supplied with hydration.
This means that you need to supply oil to prevent hydration from evaporating and keeping the skin moisturized.
How to supply oil to your skin/body
1. Take an appropriate amount of product on clean hands
2. Spread the product evenly on your face |
We explained previously that it is important to improve the skin’s barrier function to achieve smooth skin.
To do this, it is necessary to provide sufficient moisture to the skin to prevent moisture evaporation while softening the skin.
If possible, we recommend using creams and gels that contain moisturizing ingredients.
For ideal moisturization, it is best to use skincare products in the following order.
- Lotions to replenish hydration
- Milky lotions and gels to soften hydration with hydrophilic ingredients
- Creams and oils to prevent hydration evaporation with lipophilic ingredients
Hydrophilic ingredients include glyceric, BG, and DPG.
Lipophilic ingredients include fatty acid esters, hydrocarbon water, and higher alcohol.
If you prioritize convenience, we recommend all-in-one products.
All-in-one products replenish water, oil, and moisturizing ingredients at the same time.
Moisturizing your feet and legs
Our feet tend to be neglected, but it is important to moisturize them as well.
It is especially important to moisturize the shin area because it has very few sebaceous glands and are prone to dryness.
Hydration easily evaporates, and external stimuli and bacteria can easiy irritate this area.
Make sure to moisturize your legs and feet too!
If you want to easily moisturize your body, use an all-in-one product
If you want to easily moisturize your entire body, we recommend using an all-in-one product.
All-in-one products allow you to moisturize your face, neck, back, legs, and any other part of your body with just one bottle.
It also replenishes many moisturizing ingredients simultaneously, so your skincare routine will be more simple yet effective.

Other body care methods
【Morning】Reapply moisturizer
Earlier, we discussed how to moisturize before and after bathing, but the best time to moisturize your entire body is also in the morning.
Some people shower in the morning in order to remove sweat and sebum that has accumulated during sleep. But after showering, the skin is extremely prone to dryness.
If you go outside with your skin in this state, your skin’s barrier function will weaken and it can become difficult to improve skin problems.
If possible, reapply your moisturizer after showering in the morning or before getting ready for the day.
This will help to keep your entire body hydrated.
【During the day】Moisturize on top of your makeup
You can moisturize your entire body throughout the day too.
The best time to moisturize throughout the day is when your skin is feeling dry or your makeup is falling off.
When touching up your makeup, spray a hydrating mist, moisturize, and apply a layer of foundation or powder.
When miosturizing on top of your makeup, gels and milky lotions are effective
When moisturizing over your makeup, many people think of mist-type lotions.
However, gel products and miky lotions are better for moisturizing over your makeup.
There are 3 reasons why.
- Mist-type lotions only provide hydration.
- Surfactants in gels and milky lotions are effective.
- The texture and consistency of gels and milky lotions keep the product on your face.
By using an all-in-one gel, you can effectively moisturize your face even with makeup on.
【During the day】Moisturize your body
If you are concerned about dryness during the day, moisturize your body too.
Keep a small bottle of moisturizer so that you can reapply to the areas you are concerned about.
【Weekends】Face masks
Unlike weekdays, many of us have more time for skincare on the weekends.
Your skincare routine should not be any different, but if you want to take more time to moisturize your skin, use face masks.
Specifically, we recommend sheet masks because they contain plently of beauty and moisturizing ingredients.
However, if you use sheet masks, please keep in mind that you need to moisturize your skin afterwards.
After using sheet masks, your skin may feel moist, but the moisture on the surface of the skin evaporates rapidly.
【During meals】Pay attention to nutrients
Not only is it important to take good care of your skin, but also to fix your lifestyle and eat a well-balanced diet.
Human skin is produced from the nutrients that we get from food, and a healthy intestinal environment helps regulate the turnover process.
If you want to improve the condition of your skin, you should consciously consume foods that contain the following nutrients.
Protein
From hair to skin to muscles to organs, proteins are the building blocks of the body.
Lack of protein can cause the skin to become dry.
It can also reduce physical strength and immunity, so be sure to consume it regularly.
Recommended protein sources: meat, fish, eggs, soy beans
Healthy fats
Healthy fats are the source of energy for the body.
Lack of healthy fats can lead to dry skin and skin thinning.
Recommended healthy fats sources; meat, fish, seeds
Vitamin A
Vitamin A maintains skin moisture and improves the barrier function.
Recommended vitamin A sources; eggs, green and yellow vegetables
Vitamin B
Vitamin B promotes metabolism.
Recommended vitamin B sources: pork, eggs, soy beans
Vitamin C
Vitamin C has antioxidant properties and promotes collagen production.
Recommended vitamin C sources: bell peppers, fruits
Vitamin E
Vitamin E regulates the turnover cycle, promotes blood circulation, and enhances metabolism.
It is more effective when taken with vitamin C.
Recommended vitamin E sources; pumpkin, avocado, seeds
How to choose moisturizers
Now that you know the importance of moisturizing for body care, you must be curious about how to choose a good moisturizer.
There are so many different types and so many different places to purchase them, so it may be confusing which one to choose.
Below, we explain the types of moisturizers and their functions.
Types of care products
It is important to make skincare a routine.
In order to do so, understand the types of products and choose them depending on your skin type, preferred texture, and climate.
The main types and features of care products are the following.
Type | Features |
Lotion | Refreshing feel with a high content of water and hydrophilic ingredients |
Milky lotion | Thick texture that contains a good balance of hydrophilic and lipophilic ingredients |
Cream | Moist feel with a high content of lipophilic ingredients |
Oil | Main ingredients are vegetable oils and mineral oils Slippery and recommended for massages |
Gel | Cool to the touch and has less lipophilic ingredients than creams and milky lotions |
If you prefer a refreshing feeling or want to use it in the summer, we recommend lotions and gels because they are versatile.
On the other hand, if you prefer a moist feeling, we recommend oils.
In addition, if you want something that you can use during any season, we recommend creams and milky lotions.
However, based on the three key points of moisturizing care, we recommend using products that contain both hydrophilic and lipophilic ingredients if you choose to use lotions.
If you value simplicity and time efficiency with your skincare, all-in-one products are also good.
When choosing a moisturizer, we recommend choosing one that is smooth, spreadable, and contains many moisturizing ingredients.
Taking care of dry skin
Many people who want to start or fix this body care regimen are concerned about dry skin.
Dry skin is caused by a weakened barrier function due to disruptions in the skin’s turnover process.
Therefore, applying moisturizers is only a temporary fix, and it cannot heal dry skin immediately.
Following the key points and correct method of moisturization, you should continue to take care of your skin everyday for at least one to two points.
