For most people, lotion is an important step in their skincare routine.
Lotion is branded as a moisturizer for:
- Reducing dryness and oiliness
- Sealing moisture into the skin
- Creating a barrier against harmful external stimuli
In reality, lotion DOES NOT have any of these benefits.
This is because lotion is NOT a moisturizer in the first place.
By continuing to use lotion as a moisturizer and expecting it to hydrate the skin, it’s doing more harm than good to the skin.
“But what can I use instead of lotion to moisturize my skin?”
In order to properly moisturize the skin, the key is to use an effective moisturizer.
Keep reading to discover why lotions are NOT moisturizers and what should be used instead to never have dry skin again.

What does it mean to ‘moisturize’?
First, it is important to understand what it means to moisturize the skin.
To be ‘moisturized’ means ‘to stay hydrated.’
In other words, being ‘moisturized’ is the state in which the skin retains an adequate amount of water.
Many people mistakenly believe that moisturizing the skin means to simply ‘hydrate’ it by applying products with high water content. Unfortunately, this is NOT moisturizing.
This is because the water replenished to the skin evaporates at room temperature and body temperature, and the skin does not ‘stay hydrated’ for long enough. In other words, the hydration is temporary.
However, temporary hydration is not moisturizing. It’s just wet skin.
We can only call it moisturizing if the following steps are taken:
- Hydrate the skin with water
- Prevent moisture evaporation
- Achieve moisture retention for a long period of time
In other words, moisturizing is a state in which water evaporation is prevented and water is retained in the skin for a long period of time.
How can I prevent moisture evaporation?
In order to prevent the water replenished to the skin from evaporating and to retain moisture, good quality OIL is necessary.
Thus, to do effective moisturizing is to replenish the skin with WATER and OIL at the same time.
In many cases, basic skincare products are made of water and oil (they also include surfactants, preservatives, colorants, fragrances, etc.). That’s why skincare products made of both water and oil have a moisturizing effect.
However, the moisturizing effects vary widely.
If all basic skincare products could moisturize effectively, we wouldn’t be writing this article. If products with a high moisturizing effect existed, the skin would be extremely healthy: wrinkle-free, blemish-free, glowing, firm, and young.
So, we have a question to ask.
What basic skincare product comes to mind that many would expect to have a high moisturizing effect?
Perhaps the first product that comes to mind is lotion, right?
Why lotions are not effective moisturizers
Lotion is 95% water
To make 100 ml of lotion, 959-995 ml of purified water and 1-5 ml of glycerin (which has a moisturizing effect) are mixed together. This means that water makes up 95%+ of lotion. In other words, it’s basically just water.
Of course, other beauty ingredients are added, including preservatives and moisturizing ingredients, but their effects are minuscule because they make up less than 5% of lotion formulas.
The original purpose of lotion is to HYDRATE, NOT to moisturize
Lotion should be used for hydration, by means of its high water content, not for moisturization.
True, the skin will ‘feel’ moisturized after using lotion – but only for a moment. It evaporates rapidly at room and body temperature.
Therefore, lotion cannot moisturize effectively because it doesn’t contain any oils to prevent water evaporation. Because effective moisturizing means to create a state in which moisture is maintained in the skin, temporary hydration from lotion cannot be called effective moisturization.
Lotion makes the skin drier
To make matters worse, when lotion evaporates, it also evaporates the water inside the skin.
This is called overdry.
Therefore, if lotions are the only product used in a skincare routine as a ‘moisturizer’, the skin will become drier than before, rather than moisturized.
Perhaps it’s easier to understand this by imagining doing chores.
When working with water (to cook, do laundry, wash dishes, and the bathtub), people with sensitive skin tend to develop extremely dry hands and fingers – and in severe cases, cracked skin.
If merely exposing the skin to water has a moisturizing effect, the skin on the hands should be healthier the more they come into contact with water.
But the reality is the opposite.
Instead of being moisturized, the hands become dried and hard because the water on the hands from doing chores evaporates, stripping the skin of its natural water content too. This causes excessive dryness (overdry), where parts of the skin that have lost their flexibility start to crack and bleed.
Doing chores is a good example of how hydration alone cannot improve the skin’s dryness.
It’s actually better to do nothing than to only use lotion.
It’s time to ditch lotion: How to moisturize without drying the skin
In order to achieve the ultimate moisturizing effect for healthy and youthful-looking skin, it is important to effectively moisturize by replenishing the skin with water and oil simultaneously.
Of course, to do this, an effectively moisturizer is indispensable.
“But where can I find an effective moisturizer that will keep my dry skin moisturized for a long time?”
